Why are there so many types of Christianity?

The questions we must first ask in relation to our question:

  1. What are the main different denominations?

  2. What are the differences in the denominations?

  3. Do all churches have unity in teaching?

The overwhelming number of denominations of churches seems wildly off-putting for those researching the Christian faith, with many questioning if all the churches teach the same thing.

Historically, there have been three main denominations of Christianity:

  • Eastern Orthodox

  • Roman Catholicism

  • Protestant

We see predominantly Catholic and Protestant churches in the UK, with numerous other denominations spawning from Protestantism or a rejection of any title, thus classifying them as nondenominational. The differences in the main three denominations are not subtle, yet they are mainly tradition-oriented as opposed to scriptural dissonance.

The reason for the vast number of churches can be put down to a number of factors, such as scriptural disagreement, location, or tradition. The main difference seen today would arguably be the style of worship the churches engage in. For those belonging to Catholicism or Eastern Orthodoxy, we see a more traditional style of service, where traditions have been passed down through the ages. Protestant and nondenominational branches can have a more traditional lean; however, they tend more toward the modern age.

Scriptural differences are not absent, however, with such things as the necessity of baptism, the importance of the saints, and the influence progressive ideology should have in the church all playing a part in the denominational difference between churches.

Conclusion

Despite the many differences, all Christians affirm that the key ideas are to be agreed upon, regardless of the church. This is the idea that God exists as three equally divine "persons" and that the only way to be saved is through repentance and believing in Jesus’ death and resurrection.
